Apple’s iOS has been first in the market for smartphones and tablets – the Apple iPhone and the iPad continue to be a major player in both markets. Google’s Android operating system has been different in that it has been available for many hardware manufacturers to use, so maximising its use in the smartphone and table markets. Though there are many andoird contenders in the smartphone market, the large variety of manufacturers joining the tablet market using the android operating system has meant an unevenness of function and quality so making competition with the Apple iPad more difficult to recognise, as comparisons are rarely able to be made exactly like for like.
At the top end of the market are the 32GB Sony and 16GB Samsung Galaxy made in two sizes and the larger of which is pretty near to the specifications of the iPad. In fact there are a number of the Galaxy Tb series at different specifications. Mid price is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 16GB/WiFi which is a Honeycomb tablet with a quality screen and cheapish keyboard/dock. Also the Asus Slider with its built in keyboard perhaps defeats the idea of a tablet but is good for those who really need to use a keyboard to function with a computer.
There are a number of tablets at under £100 many of these with a 7” screen and very portable but with limited memory. Some of the cheaper and smaller tablets may be pretty slow, but can still be a good first link to the web for children. It is always possible to look at upgrades for memory or Wifi connections for example as there are a number of electronic components that will enhance function of tablet PCs.
